Registrar description

This course instructs how to design in an inherently safe manner considering technical and regulatory aspects, as well as political and economic variables. The approach goes beyond the perception of "safety" as a cap, thus encouraging creativity in delivering "safer designs" as a benefit to society. Concepts are illustrated via case studies that include Bhopal pesticide plant disaster, World Trade Center collapse, and the Firestone and Ford tire controversy. A personal project is at the core of the learning process where the student illustrates achieving safe and functional design outcomes in an area of their own choosing.
